By end of 2012:
Definitely: Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones with coiled wire, better than Beats, half the price. (~$140)
Possibly: Google Nexus 7 tablet (16GB), because it seems awesome and good value ($280 @ kogan)
Oh... and this...definitely. positively. 100%.
*goes crazy*

By late 2013:
Definitely: New laptop (Thinkpad X1 Carbon or Asus Zenbook Prime or their successors), because I want to run DOTA2 in a very light package (~$1300-1400 right now)
Possibly (if I'm feeling stupid): Fenix LD-20 flashlight, because who doesn't want a flashlight so powerful it can give people temporary blindness? (~$60, yes.. that's pretty insane for a flashlight.)
By mid 2014:
Definitely: Samsung Galaxy S4 or S5 or latest nexus phone, hopefully it's powerful enough to run crysis or atleast LoL (~$60/month on contract or $550 unlocked)
Possibly: New gaming rig in place of current desktop PC, we're running on a core2duo PC right now man! (#firstworldproblems)
Well.. if I follow this.... it would mean that smartphones are replaced every 2 years, laptops every 3.5 years and desktop PCs every 4/5 years. Seem excessive? I guess so but hey, it's actually pretty average. You keep things long enough to make good use of your purchase but replace them once every few years so you can feel the massive jump in technology.
